Why does the frame decide a composite deck?

The boards are the part you choose and the part that lasts. The part that fails first is underneath them, and it is not covered by anyone's board warranty.

Joist spacing for the lay

16 inches on center for a straight run, 12 for a diagonal or a picture-frame border. Wood spacing under composite is how a floor starts to feel soft.

Gaps set by board temperature

An eighth to three-sixteenths side to side, a minimum three-sixteenths against a structure, tightened when the board is already hot.

Joist tape as standard

Butyl membrane along joist and beam tops that self-seals around every fastener. It protects the half of the deck you cannot replace cheaply.

One fastener system, not three

Clip, screw and grooved board from the same manufacturer, because mixing them creates both spacing problems and warranty problems.

Matched metal in treated framing

Hot-dip galvanized or stainless throughout. Copper-based preservative is roughly twice as corrosive to steel as the chemistry it replaced.

Boards with an evaluation report

ASTM D7032 testing and an ICC-ES report is what a building official relies on. It is a question you can ask any supplier.

Why composite gapping matters more in a Rochester Hills year

A composite board does the opposite of a wet pressure-treated one. It does not shrink as it dries; it expands and contracts with temperature, and around here the temperature swing across a year is enormous. The same deck can sit under snow in February and read well over ninety degrees on a dark board in July. Gap it too tight in the cold and it buckles in the heat. Gap it as though it were wet softwood and you get a floor you can drop keys through. Installers who work here read the board's own surface temperature on the day. We fit capped composite and PVC over framing built and taped for it.

Capped composite typically lands between $45 and $80 per square foot installed here, including the frame underneath it. Board brand matters less than the structure: a composite surface over a frame that was not built to carry it is the expensive way to buy a problem.
Capped composite handles freeze-thaw better than softwood decking because the exposed faces wear a polymer cap that does not absorb water. What it does do is move with temperature, which is why the gaps matter more here than in a mild climate.
Manufacturers generally call for an eighth to three-sixteenths of an inch side to side and a minimum three-sixteenths where a board meets a post or a wall. If the board is already hot, over about 90 degrees, it is near its maximum expansion and the tighter end applies. We read the board's surface temperature, not the forecast.
Sometimes. The frame has to be sound, at the right joist spacing, and at the right footing depth. Composite wants joists at 16 inches on center for a straight lay and 12 inches for a diagonal one, and a 1980s frame here is often neither of those, on piers that never reached 42 inches.
Ask whether it carries an ICC-ES evaluation report. Composite and plastic lumber get code recognition through ASTM D7032, which drives flexural, creep, freeze-thaw, slip resistance and fastener-holding testing, and the evaluation report is what lets a building official accept the product. It is a checkable answer, not a brochure claim.
No staining and no sealing, ever, which is the real saving in a climate with a short finishing window. It still needs washing, and a dark board still runs hot underfoot in July. Anyone promising zero upkeep is selling, not explaining.
They clip the board from the side into its groove, set the gap for you, and leave no screw heads on the surface. They cost more and go slower. The rule is not to mix systems: a clip, a screw and a grooved board from three different manufacturers is how warranties get voided.
More than ever, because the surface will outlive it. Joist tape along the tops of joists, beams and the ledger sheds the water that would otherwise sit in the joist-to-board interface and self-seals around every fastener. The framing is the expensive half of a deck to replace.
